Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival 2022: Romeo and Juliet
dir. Chris Anthony

Here we can see the opening fight in full swing, with other found objects such as a weed whacker and chain saw (altered for safety) and a baseball bat. Other weapons used in this scene include a hose and a fencing saber. Romeo and Juliet, Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Here Gregory (Tiana Mudzimurema) can be seen inviting Romeo (Krosby Roza) and Benvolio (Marlon Burnley) to the Capulet's annual feast. The invitations used later became photo booth props for the party scene. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Here Rosaline (Rachel Thomas) can be seen arriving during the party scene. Behind her one of three custom celestial themed center pieces can be seen. Other props not pictured include cups with magnets inside of them for the serving of the signature cocktail, a full iPad photo booth set, garden furniture, and others. More photos to come! Here the ensemble enjoys the dance party! In the background one of the sets of garden furniture can be seen. Romeo and Juliet, Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Romeo (Krosby Roza) and the Friar (Chauncy Thomas) discuss his marriage to Juliet. Behind them we can see the flower basket used in the gathering of poison flowers for Juliet's poison later. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Here we see the group of men we deemed the "Montecrew" interacting with Peter and the Nurse. Here the nurse can be seen carrying a cat fan, a reference to her relationship with Tybalt. Mercutio can be seen carrying his monogramed flask, a character choice made by the actor. Romeo and Juliet, Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

The Nurse (MaConnia Chesser) and Romeo (Krosby Roza) can be seen talking about Romeo's marriage proposal. He is seen here holding a pink rose, as a pink flower is referenced in a prior line, and the rose is a symbol of the Montagues in our world. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Here we see the fatal fight between Mercutio (Jess Alexander) and Tybalt (Zac Harness), with Romeo (Krosby Roza) and Benvolio (Marlon Burnley) observing. They begin this fight with non-lethal fencing sabers, and things escalate as Mercutio brings out one of many switchblades used in the show. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

The Friar (Chauncy Thomas) stops Juliet (Josie Mi) from taking her own life. The switchblades for this production were made using switchblade combs, with gaps filled by Bondo and covered by silver leaf. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Lady Capulet (Carolina Vargas) and the Nurse (MaConnia Chesser) can be seen showing Juliet (Josie Mi) her wedding dress. Shopping bags sourced from designer boutiques during a day trip to Chicago. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Juliet (Josie Mi) contemplates taking the potion given to her by the Friar. This potion was made using water and gel based food dye, with a white gel food dye used to cause the opaque effect, intended to emulate a "green drink." Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

The Capulets mourn after discovering the death of their dear Juliet. In this photo Juliet's bedding can be seen, these unicorn bedsheets were chosen to fit the Capulets' general celestial aesthetic, as well as a reminder to the audience of the age of the character. In this scene she also dies clutching a stuffed unicorn. Romeo and Juliet, Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Romeo (Krosby Roza) buying poison from the Apothecary (David Chudzynski). In our world Mantua is a rehab center, Romeo can be seen here holding a bag of his clothes as you would receive upon leaving an inpatient facility. The poison was also a tinfoil square, an image commonly associated with Fentanyl, a hot button issue in the media especially in the area. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Romeo (Krosby Roza) can be seen preparing his poison, in a smoothie shaker with water. This was decided after a discussion with Krosby about what he wanted from the poison, he stated that someone sprinkling drugs in to their morning smoothie was "so Los Angeles," this in tandem to the media concern of fentanyl contaminating water sources lead to this choice. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

Juliet (Josie Mi) preparing to take her own life with yet another of our combs turned switchblade. Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

The Prince (David Chudzynski) giving the final monologue, holding a suicide note from Romeo addressed to his father. The contents of this letter contained an actual suicide note written by Krosby from Romeo's perspective. Romeo and Juliet, Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, Photos by Peter Ringenberg.

The entire cast taking their bows, behind the cast on stage left is a candlelit memorial built by the actors on stage with photos of Juliet, Romeo, Mercutio, and Tybalt, these are all actual photos of the actors as children. This memorial also included personal items such as Romeo's hat, Juliet's stuffed unicorn, Mercutio's flask, and Tybalt's fencing medals.
